Symptom removal is the type of doctoring offered by the medical profession and by most holistic doctors as well. Symptoms are the focus, by and large, and the goal is to make them go away. The problem is that symptoms often point to deeper imbalances that are not usually not addressed. Deep healing is a much more profound process. It has to do with restoring the body to its former state of health. This means restoring its energy production system, its oxidation rate, its minerals ratios and much more. Healing therefore usually takes longer and involves lifestyle changes as well. It is more work for both the client and the practitioner. Lifestyle, in fact, is always central and this is a good way to tell if your doctor is focused on symptoms or on deeper healing. In the long run, however, it saves time and lots of money, and may save your life as well. The nutrition and lifestyle programs I design are for healing. They are described in other articles on this website such as Nutritional Balancing And Why I Recommend It. Symptom removal occurs as a “side effect“ of these programs. I know that many people do not want healing, and just prefer a quick fix. I understand and accept this, but in this article I want to help the reader to understand why healing is so much better.  WHAT DOES DEEP HEALING INVOLVE?</p>
<p>Healing involves the following:</p>
<p>1) Improving Genetics. Everyone is born with some mutated DNA today due to radiation that is everywhere on earth. This is due to the use of radioactive materials in A-bomb tests, ammunition, medical x-rays and many other natural sources of radiation as well. Each of us is then exposed to ionizing radiation and toxic chemicals that can cause genetic damage. As mutated cells reproduce, more tissue is affected until illness manifests. Nutritional balancing programs help reverse this process of degeneration. What occurs with nutritional balancing, and does not occur much with either medical drugs or most holistic and naturopathic medical care is that the rate of DNA reproduction and protein synthesis, and the accuracy of protein synthesis, improves dramatically, in time. This process slowly improves the quality of all tissues of the body and can allow the body to remove all diseased, toxic, mutated, and otherwise damaged proteins, hormones and enzymes from the body. This is truly remarkable and a wonderful benefit of a nutritional balancing program.</p>
<p>2) Removing Two Dozen Toxic Metals And Hundreds Or Perhaps Thousands Of Harmful Chemicals From The Body. Everyone is exposed to thousands of times the amount of toxic metals as has occurred in past generations. This is due to industrial use of toxic metals, coal-burning power plant emissions, sealed buildings and household and office chemicals that are everywhere, particularly in cities and in some occupations such as builders and plumbers. Toxic metals replace vital minerals in enzyme binding sites, leading to impaired functioning of the enzymes. Toxic chemicals bind to receptor sites and interfere with metabolic processes in many other ways that lead to impaired health. Nutritional balancing and detoxification with near infrared light sauna therapy, enemas and other methods will slowly remove accumulated toxic chemicals and heavy metals from the body.</p>
<p>3) Replenishing Dozens Of Essential Nutrients. Depleted soil, use of hybrid crops, chemical agriculture, poor quality refined food diets, poor eating habits and stressful lifestyles contribute to widespread nutrient deficiencies in the population. Most children are born with nutritional imbalances due to imbalances in the parents. Nutrient deficiencies are subtle at times, and result in a multitude of health conditions. Replenishing all the vital minerals takes several years, at least, as the body has buffering systems to prevent excessive absorption of any nutrient. Tissue mineral analysis, when done by a laboratory that does not wash the hair and interpreted properly, can help guide the design of nutrition programs to slowly replace nutrients without upsetting body chemistry. Lifestyle changes are also often essential to reduce stress and improve food choices, shopping and cooking practices, and eating habits.</p>
<p>4) Eliminating Infections (Biological Toxins). In my experience. most people have half a dozen or more chronic infections. Over half the population has some degree of overgrowth of intestinal candida albicans and other intestinal pathogens. Tooth and gum infections are also very common and can cause serious health problems. Most infections in the body produce toxins called endotoxins and exotoxins. These circulate in the blood and can contribute to many conditions such as post-nasal drip, headaches, chronic pain bloating, fatigue and hundreds of others. With nutritional balancing, In most cases antibiotics, antifungal and anti-parasite herbs or drugs are not required to clear these infections. Enhancing the body’s energy, improving circulation, replenishing nutrients and eliminating toxic substances improves infection-fighting ability and removes cellular debris on which the organisms feed.</p>
<p>5) Balancing The Autonomic Nervous System. Most people have overused their sympathetic nervous system, also called the fight-or-flight system. This system suppresses the immune system and suppresses digestion, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste products. The result is poor health. Reducing sympathetic nervous system activity through nutritional balancing, sauna therapy again, lifestyle changes and stress reduction beneficially affects the autonomic balance and general health.</p>
<p>6) Mental And Emotional Healing. Many types of mental and emotional healing occur with nutritional balancing. These include releasing emotional traumas, reducing the impact of negative situations, reducing emotional excesses and improving cognition, memory and many other mental faculties. For instance, many people today suffer from brain fog, depression, anxieties, panic attacks, phobias. Most of these respond exceedingly well in a short period of time to correction with nutritional balancing. This field I call medical psychology. Another level at which we work is to help a person let go of false ideas such as cynicism, hatred, arrogance and guilt. These can be every bit as toxic as physical poisons. I also assist people let go of toxic emotions including anger, resentment, unfounded fears and envy. These also activate the sympathetic nervous system and deplete vital nutrients. Many therapies including meditation, counseling, nutritional correction, color therapy, bodywork and others can help release toxic ideas and emotions.</p>
<p>7) Mental Development. Healing also involves the total development of a human being’s potential. This goes very far beyond symptom removal and is covered in separate articles such as one entitled Mental Development. The goal is to develop all of our latent talents and abilities. These are vast, as we know from some of the few who have gone on to develop them. In other words, we are not here just to eat, work, sleep and raise families, though all these activities are fine. This aspect of healing requires meditation and a more strict diet and lifestyle, but not anything unpleasant, in my view. It is a slow process in most people.  DEFINITION OF SYMPTOMATIC METHODS</p>
<p>There is much confusion about what constitutes symptomatic healing. This section explains it in more detail. I will begin with definitions. Symptomatic as used in this article means that the method or technique is mainly focused on symptom relief. This is in contrast to balancing the body and other approaches. With these methods, one does not focus on symptoms at all, or very little.  Characteristics of symptomatic approaches.</p>
<p>1. They may be designed to be inexpensive, rapid and simple to apply.</p>
<p>2. One measures success by how well a symptom subsides, even if it is temporary, as it is in many cases. Long-term effects, for example, and side effects, are usually considered less important or they are ignored altogether. For example, cancer statistics are quoted in terms of five year survival. This only means the person is alive, and nothing else. The quality of life may be poor, the cancer may be growing elsewhere and death may come the following day or week. But for now, the symptom is gone!</p>
<p>3. Symptomatic methods are popular, in part, because they are based on observable phenomena. Methods that balance the body such as nutritional balancing are far more difficult to actually evaluate, especially in the early stages of a person’s healing and development. Later on, the benefits are obvious in better overall health and general well-being.   Allopathic or drug medicine mainly symptomatic. The most familiar example of symptomatic methods for most people is our conventional medical system. This consists of pills, operations and other items designed mainly to relieve symptoms, from headaches to heart attacks. The exception is some forms of surgery to repair broken bones, for example. These go to the problem itself and correct it once and for all. However, this type of surgery is not the most common type. Most is to relieve blocked arteries, remove tumors and other more symptomatic corrective procedures. Allopathic drugs are heavily advertised and some seem to work well. However, their cost is rising out of control. degenerative diseases such as cancer and diabetes are spiraling out of control and more doctors are being sued as a result of the superficial nature and inadequacies of this method of healing.  Most holistic, naturopathic, homeopathic, herbal healing is also often symptomatic, although it tends to be much less toxic than most allopathic or drug medicine. Most holistic and natural practitioners use less toxic remedies such as herbs, vitamins, or homeopathic remedies. However, most still focus on symptoms. An exception is acupuncturists, Rolfers, structural integration, foot reflexologists, competent chiropractic, and a few others. This, in my mind, is unfortunate, but understandable since the deeper methods of correcting the stress response, for example, and deep removal of toxic metals are rarely mentioned in naturopathic, homeopathic, or herbal colleges today. The natural methods are much better than highly toxic and costly drug medical care, but often leave much to be desired because they are still so symptomatically based. They are best, however, if one wishes a purely symptomatic approach.</p>
<p>EXAMPLES OF SYMPTOMATIC VERSUS BALANCING APPROACHES</p>
<p>A Structural Example. If one goes to a chiropractor who simply adjusts the vertebrae of the neck to relieve a headache, this is what I would call basically symptomatic. The adjustment may also balance the spine, but is not aimed at doing this primarily. However, if the chiropractor first checks the entire spine to see where the problem areas are, then he or she is not simply giving symptomatic treatment. Instead, one is addressing a deeper imbalance. This, then, is not symptomatic healing, but rather balancing.  A Nutritional Example. One could give a nutrient to remove a symptom. For example, one can give vitamin C to cure a cold. This is symptomatic nutrition at its worst. However, it is done all the time and, indeed, is helpful at times.</p>
<p>Alternatively, one can use vitamin C to raise the sodium level on a hair analysis, or to lower the copper level, or to remove cadmium, or for other reasons. These would be balancing body chemistry with the same remedy, and is much less of a symptomatic approach.</p>
<p>A homeopathic example. One can use arnica to help relieve a painful bruise or cut. This is pure symptomatic homeopathy, though it can be quite effective, and is relatively cheap and safe compared to the use of some allopathic drugs. One can also use homeopathic examination to prescribe a “constitutional remedy”. This is one geared to the person’s entire constitution, not simply one symptom or another. This is less symptomatic.</p>
<p>A medical example. If a patient complains of hip pain, a doctor may do a quick physical and just give a painkiller. This is mainly symptomatic, since the doctor did not look for deeper causes and uses a remedy that only addresses the superficial pain. A less symptomatic approach is to do x-rays and a thorough and complete physical examination to determine if the leg is broken, out of joint or something else is wrong before prescribing any remedy.  This discussion is needed to help one understand that the word symptomatic is often relative. We may believe that drug remedies are all symptomatic, for instance, but this is not always true.  Remedies from medical doctors may, in fact, be recommended based on deeper tests and they may balance the body a little, which is why some work. In other cases, the same remedy, such as an anti-depressant drug, will work poorly and may cause a suicide or homicide because it severely unbalances something in the body.</p>
<p>WHY ARE SYMPTOMATIC METHODS SO POPULAR?</p>
<p>1. They appear simple. This means they are largely superficial and easily understood by doctors and patients alike. Balancing methods like nutritional balancing and acupuncture are much more difficult to comprehend and to practice, as well.</p>
<p>2. Doctors, drug companies and hospitals love them. This is sadly the case because the patients never really get well. They always come back with the next symptom or problem, so it is good for business. Even the socialized medical systems of Europe, Canada and elsewhere continue this stupid and costly methods of drug medicine. However, a warning is in order. Most holistic physicians are still recommending symptomatic treatments, in my estimation. Among these are chelation therapy, bio-identical or natural hormone replacement therapy and even vitamin and herbal treatments. Homeopathy as it is usually practiced by natural doctors is also largely symptomatic.  In my conversations with many holistic practitioners, many are still interested in having the patient come back many times. Many feel they simply cannot stay in business if they truly healed people. Therefore, no matter what they profess, they are less interested in deeper balancing methods that actually heal the patient at deep levels. However, overall they are much better than conventional medical doctors I have met.</p>
<p>3. Symptomatic approaches ask very little of the patient in most cases. The person is allowed to keep eating junk food, skip adequate rest and sleep and ignore the problems in their lives.</p>
<p>PROBLEMS WITH SYMPTOMATIC APPROACHES</p>
<p>1. Superficiality. This means that dealing mainly with symptoms does not really tell us much about underlying causes of the problem.</p>
<p>2. Cost. All modern health care systems in the world are in serious financial trouble because they are largely based on symptomatic healing approaches. The patients don’t get well at a deep level. Instead, they often become more ill from the drug side effects and the fact that the underlying imbalances are not corrected or even addressed. The situation will only get worse until symptomatic medicine is abandoned in favor of deeper healing and balancing the body, and then later in favor of spiritual development.</p>
<p>3. “Adverse effects” often occur. These are also called side effects, collateral effects or unintended consequences. This problem stems from the interconnectedness of all parts of our bodies. It is impossible to just change one part of the body without affecting the rest of it. Thus, altering one condition or symptom often leads to other changes in the “system” that are unwanted.  For example, a drug that lowers blood pressure may make one tired or upset sexual activity or dangerously reduce potassium in the blood. A drug that kills bacteria may kill the good flora in the intestines, leading to yeast infections and other “secondary problems”. While some adverse effects are of little consequence, others kill people every day, though most people do not realize this and neither do most doctors. This problem can also occur with so-called “natural” or bio-identical hormone therapy, for example, because the body is not designed for hormones to be taken on a time schedule or a doctor’s schedule, for example, and all are somewhat toxic.</p>
<p>4. They tend to mask deeper problems by eliminating warning symptoms. For example, simple fatigue can signal a small cancer in the body or a pending heart attack.  However, most doctors, faced with this common complaint, do little or no testing to find out if something deeper is amiss. Instead, they may advise the patient with fatigue to exercise more, take a nap, take a vacation or worse, have a cup of coffee or tea. By following this advice, however, the patient often masks or obscures the original symptom of fatigue. This often leads to worse problems in the following months or years.</p>
<p>5. Little or no spiritual development. This occurs for several reasons. First, general health usually gets worse with symptomatic treatment, even if one feels better. Filling the body with drugs does not improve health in most cases, even if the headaches are gone and even if the blood pressure is lower.  In addition, by asking little of the client, one misses a benefit of true healing. This benefit occurs in the process of digging deeper and correcting underlying imbalances in our bodies.  Deeper healing is the slow, gentle unraveling of layers of imbalances that may be physical, emotional, mental and other levels of our bodies that cause superficial and other symptoms. This process, all by itself, tends to improve many qualities and teaches discipline, patience, persistence, honesty and other important mental and emotional skills and attributes that tend to build health on a longer-term basis.</p>
<p>6. The remedies can give a person a false sense of confidence that all is well when it is not really so. This may sound minor, but it is not. No better example can be cited than chemotherapy for cancer. It does not cure the disease, but only disables it a little. This is not healing, but just suppression in most cases. It often comes back worse than ever and now cannot be addressed nearly as easily. Symptomatic nutritional remedies, herbal treatments or homeopathics can do the same thing, by the way.</p>
<p>WHEN SYMPTOMATIC METHODS ARE OKAY OR EVEN EXCELLENT</p>
<p>Symptomatic methods are good in a number of situations:  1. When one is following a deep healing program and symptoms crop up on the way. For example, one may not sleep well at times as the body changes at deep levels. If this occurs, one might take a simple sleep remedy and not worry about deeper causes of the sleep issue. If, of course, the sleep problem continues, one might become a little concerned and check with a practitioner. However, in most cases it is just a temporary situation and a symptomatic remedy such as calcium and magnesium or L-tryptophan or valerian root or even a drug if all else fails can be used.</p>
<p>2. When one has a strictly self-limiting condition. These are the cases when one has a headache or upset stomach and it is definitely self-limiting, meaning it will clear up soon.  In these cases, taking a symptomatic remedy such as an aspirin for a headache or a Pepto-bismol for the stomach is not that bad. These are still not the best remedies as they both are toxic to some degree, but at least they will not severely unbalance the body if used only occasionally and are strictly for quick relief.</p>
<p>3. When one will not follow a deep healing program or does not know about deeper healing methods. This, unfortunately, describes many people in our society. Most are not aware of the alternatives to symptomatic medicine, so it seems strange to them and they prefer a simple pill or operation to changing their diet and lifestyle and other procedures needed to rebuild the entire system. Others are those who have essentially given up and don’t care about living any more. They are often just looking for a quick fix and are not interested in a deep healing program. Others may not be able to follow a nutritional balancing program for other reasons including financial ones, lack of support from family or friends, or others.</p>
<p>4. For certain conditions in which a symptomatic response is very desirable. Examples include an overwhelming infection, very high blood pressure, severe cardiac arrhythmia, any cancer (see #6 below), or other similar situations.  This is where emergency medicine excels. In these cases, one must deal with the symptom first. Then, when the condition is stable, one may begin a balancing program to correct underlying problems.  5. Some use of symptomatic remedies may convince a patient that nutrition can be helpful. This is why we use them at times in nutritional balancing programs. We are careful, however, that symptomatic approaches do not unbalance the oxidation rate or any of the major mineral ratios on a properly performed hair mineral analysis.  6. For active cancers. In these cases, one should do a program to stop the cancer, rather than nutritional balancing. This may be said to be a symptomatic treatment, since it is aimed at a particular symptom, although the Kelley metabolic cancer therapy, in particular, is far more than this. It is a powerful general cleansing therapy that will benefit many conditions, in fact. However, it is still aimed at cancer, and in this sense it is symptomatic to a degree and will not go as deep as nutritional balancing, which should be done only after a cancer is no longer present or at least has been slowed down or stopped in its development.</p>
<p>7. Possibly some other advanced diseases may respond better to a more symptomatic approach than to nutritional balancing, though I do not have enough experience with them to say definitely. These might include diseases of mental exhaustion such as advanced multiple sclerosis. Early cases do very well with nutritional balancing, however. Other include late cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and maybe late stage cases of Parkinson’s disease and other brain diseases and dementias.</p>

<p>The body functions best with a slightly alkaline pH. The normal pH of human blood ranges from 7.35 to 7.45. For pH values, 1 is the most acidic, while 14 is the most alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral, which means it is right in the middle of the acid base scale and is neither acidic nor alkaline. When the body chemistry turns too acidic, we see many disorders and diseases develop.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>For example, cancer thrives in an overly acidic body chemistry. Every single case of arthritis and every type of arthritis (ostoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, polyarthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, etc.) I have ever seen was associated with an overly acid body chemistry. People with more acidic body tissues experience more pain. If they can alkalize their body more, they experience less pain, or sometimes even a disappearance of pain. Generally speaking, when the body tissues and blood are at a healthy pH, a person is in good health.</p>

<p>The pH balance of the blood is very rarely disturbed because the body has so many backup systems that regulate the pH of the blood. The body places a high priority on balancing the blood pH since too much variation in the pH of the blood can be fatal. It will always balance the blood above all other things because, if not, it will mean death. Occasionally we see a dangerous acidic condition in diabetics called diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition caused by too many acids in the bloodstream.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Another overly acid condition of the blood is called metabolic acidosis that can occur in patients who suffer from chronic pulmonary obstructive disease as they are not able to exhale carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide breaks down into an acid (carbonic acid). Too many acids overload the kidneys&#8217; ability to eliminate them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The higher the metabolism, the more acid wastes are generated. We see that in hyperthyroidism, the thyroid turns up the body metabolism too high: the heart beats too fast, the breath rate increases, the bowels move too quickly and more acid wastes are generated as a result. In the extreme case of hyperthyroidism, we see thyrotoxicosis, a condition marked by fever, exhaustion and overly acid blood (yet another cause of metabolic acidosis).</p>

<p>Yet, much more common than these rare pH conditions of the blood is a situation caused by excess acids stored in the body tissues (such as muscles, joints, bones, connective tissue, kidneys, liver, brain and other organs) while the blood remains pH balanced. This overly acid situation happens to most Americans due to the standard American lifestyle. Acids accumulate in vital organs and attract calcium deposits. These calcium deposits show up as arthritis, bone spurs, gallstones, kidney stones and calcification of tumors (which are always very acidic areas).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Calcium is attracted to very acidic areas because it is so alkaline. The body uses calcium as a buffer to neutralize excess acid. This is simple acid/base chemistry principles taught to all medical doctors all over the world. All chemists are familiar with these concepts as well. The body will pull calcium out of the bones, if needed, to neutralize excess acidity in the blood and tissues. For this reason, too much acidity in the body over a long enough period of time will result in osteoporosis.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>How does the body accumulate these excess acids? Some of the most common causes are the following:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>1. Shallow breathing</p>
<p>2. Lack of exercise</p>
<p>3. Not enough sleep/ burning the candle at both ends</p>
<p>4. Stimulants &#8211; caffeine, cocaine, speed, diet pills, pills taken to stay awake</p>
<p>5. Not drinking enough water</p>
<p>6. Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)</p>
<p>7. Consumption of excess protein in the diet.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Proteins break down to amino acids which must be eliminated by the body in order to keep the blood at the proper pH balance. The only two ways to eliminate acid from the body are through the breath and through the kidneys. When the kidneys fail, they may only be able to eliminate a tiny amount of acid or maybe none at all. The body then tries to eliminate the acid through the breath. The breath rate increases dramatically. A normal breath rate is about 10 to 14 breaths per minute.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>A high breath rate is one of the ways we can tell if a person is in ill health. The more times a minute a person breathes, the sicker they usually are. According to Ayurvedic medicine, a very high breath rate can be a sign that a person will die soon. In kidney failure, breathing more often is usually not near enough of a compensation to eliminate all of the acids, and if the person in kidney failure does not get kidney dialysis to eliminate the acids and waste products in their blood, they can die in as little as a few days.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Excess protein can turn the body chemistry to an overly acidic state. Animal proteins are sulfurated amino acids that are particularly acidic that can overwhelm the kidneys and cause an accumulation of acids in the body tissues. Meat can also be very high in uric acid, a normal byproduct of metabolism, stored in the muscle tissue of an animal. Excess consumption of foods containing uric acid can cause gout. The average American diet contains about 3 times more protein than what is recommended for a healthy adult. Athletes commonly overload themselves with excess protein by consuming large amounts of protein powders that are not needed and cause a strain on the kidneys to eliminate them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Everyone needs some protein and we cannot have a perfectly alkaline diet. But the body easily eliminates the acids created by normal metabolism as well as from a diet that contains a healthy amount of protein. The problem is excess protein. In the early 1900&#8242;s, meat was consumed more as a luxury item. As the years have gone by, the American consumption of meat has reached an astoundingly high frequency &#8211; instead of once or twice a week, Americans are consuming meat at every meal. Many research studies who that the consumption of excess protein causes premature aging of the kidneys and a deterioration of kidney function.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Because the kidneys must eliminate the acids that result from eating protein, medical doctors (nephrologists) always recommend to patients in kidney failure to follow a low protein diet. If a person in kidney failure tried to consume a high protein diet, it could be life-threatening because their kidneys could not eliminate enough of the acids generated in the body by the high amount of protein. This is another case of metabolic acidosis. Kidney dialysis removes not only metabolic wastes, but acids from the body as well. I don&#8217;t think anyone wants to go through regular kidney dialysis in order to remove acids from their body.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>A diet that is pH balanced contains proteins in the proper proportion. No one, not even people who are a Type O Blood, needs meat 3 times a day. This is far too much protein to consume in a day and far exceeds any recommended daily allowance for protein. I do not believe in Blood Type Diets because for every single one of my patients who followed a Blood Type Diet, they stayed sick and did not get well. Recently I discovered that the author of this book wrote another book and reversed many of his earlier beliefs.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The following are recommendations for a healthy alkalizing diet. A pH balanced healthy diet is high in plant foods and low in animal foods. Plant foods are high in antioxidants (meat contains no antioxidants whatsoever), fiber (meat contains no fiber whatsoever), phytonutrients that fight cancer (again, meat contains none of these). The healthiest, most alkaline diet contains foods as close to their original state as possible. This means that they have not been processed, refined, or canned. They are organically grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, hormones, or antibiotics.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>None of us is perfect,and sometimes availability is a problem. For example, when I request whole grain bread at restaurants, I am told they don&#8217;t have it because no one ever asks for it. It&#8217;s time for everyone to start asking for it! We can still do our best to eat healthy most of the time. It is what we do (eat, drink, sleep, breathe, feel, and believe) 6 days out of the week that largely determines our health. If we have healthy food and lifestyle habits most of the time, we can be reasonably healthy.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>◦                <strong>Eat Whole, Unprocessed Foods</strong></p>
<p>Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, nut butters, nut milks, seed butters, and seed milks.</p>
<p>Nut, seed and grain milks such as rice milk, oat milk, almond milk, pecan milk, and cashew milk can frequently take the place of pasteurized, homogenized cow&#8217;s milk, a highly acidic and mucus-forming food.</p>
<p>Some fresh raw foods should be included in the daily diet since they place the least amount of strain on the digestive organs, are the most alkaline, and contain the most vitamins and minerals.</p>
<p>The most highly alkalizing foods are leafy green vegetables, algae (spirulina,chlorella, etc.), cereal grasses (wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa) and lemons. Although lemons are acidic when they are tested outside of the body, when they are consumed, they have an alkalizing effect on the body. Most herbs have an alkalizing effect on the body (except for stimulant and caffeine-containing herbs). The <strong>Essential Nutrients Formula</strong> is a highly alkalizing formula that often results in a beneficial shift to a more alkaline body chemistry.</p>
<p>The <strong>Essential oil of Lemon</strong> is also highly alkalizing. Unlike lemon juice, which is made by pressing the pulp, Lemon Essential oil is pressed from the peel, giving it a different phytonutrient profile and a stronger alkalizing effect than lemon juice .</p>

<p>◦                <strong>Get a Juicer and Start Juicing</strong></p>
<p>A juicer is an excellent tool that can greatly improve health, and can sometimes work faster than herbs when used as part of a <strong><a title="Juice Fast" href="http://www.health-mastery.com/the-healing-power-of-juicing/" target="_blank">juice fast</a></strong>. Juices are concentrated, so many people need to dilute them half and half with water to reduce the natural sugar content.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>◦                <strong>Sweeteners:</strong></p>
<p>Sweeteners should be as close to nature as possible. Including some fresh fruit in the diet during the day can sometimes stop cravings for sweets later on in the day. The natural sweeteners I like the most are brown rice syrup and date sugar. Second only to whole fruit, they seem to have less of an effect on the blood sugar. Of course, stevia is the best option for many people as it does not raise the blood sugar at all, but some people complain of a funny taste. For me, the taste of stevia depends on the quality. If you&#8217;re not enjoying the taste of stevia, perhaps try another brand. Honey, maple syrup &#8211; these are natural, especially if the honey is raw, unheated and unfiltered and if the maple syrup is Grade B organic and formaldehyde-free. We are looking at alkaline substances here, but they can still have an effect on blood sugar and some people with blood sugar issues may need to limit them. I am amazed at the soft drink/soda pop consumption in America. These beverages are highly acidic and are full of simple carbohydrates that contribute to obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome. I do not believe there is a safe level of soda pop consumption. It should be eliminated from the diet completely. Learn how to be happy with less &#8220;sweet&#8221; in your foods. Try sweetening less and less. You might be amazed to find out that many recipes that call for a certain amount of sugar could actually be reduced or even cut in half without much affect on the taste. It&#8217;s good to experiment. Artificial sweeteners: we have enough research now to show that these are harmful, can cause cancer and can damage the nervous system. It&#8217;s not a good idea. Do not consume artificial sweeteners. I do not believe there is any safe level of consumption. I&#8217;ve known several people with memory problems who stopped their diet soda intake and their memory came back. Quit now before it&#8217;s too late and the damage has been done! We need to stop the thinking that there is a miracle synthetic chemical out there that&#8217;s going to allow us to continue to eat junk food without repercussions. Learn to be happy with god quality, organic, unprocessed foods. Taste buds are highly adapted and can easily be changed. Your taste buds are not that different than anyone else&#8217;s. After a while of eating pure, unprocessed foods, it becomes natural &#8211; sugar and soda pop will seem too sweet and even unpleasant and &#8220;too chemical.&#8221;</p>

<p>◦                <strong>Drink Water</strong></p>
<p>Water helps flush out excess acids through the kidneys as well as other waste products created by metabolism. Water is best drunk between meals or about 15 &#8211; 30 minutes before a meal. Drinking large amounts of water with a meal typically dilutes the stomach acid too much and can create indigestion. However, drinking water 15 to 30 minutes <em>before</em> a meal begins helps supply the body with enough water to manufacture the enzymes and acids that are needed for optimal digestion.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>The best amount of water to drink: half of the body weight per day in ounces. For example, a person who weighs 100 pounds should drink around 50 ounces of water per day, and a person who weighs 150 pounds should drink around 75 ounces of water per day. An infant&#8217;s water needs are typically met through breastfeeding (the breastfeeding mother should stay well hydrated in order to keep the water content of her breast milk at a healthy level for the infant.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>Drinking caffeinated beverages causes a loss of water from the body; therefore, if one consumes coffee, black tea, caffeinated green tea, or soft drinks containing caffeine, they should drink extra water to make up for the dehydrating effect of caffeine. Caffeine also turns up the metabolism, which creates slightly more acid in the body.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>◦                <strong>Minimize or Eliminate Processed Foods: </strong></p>
<p>Foods that are highly processed are more acidic. They include white sugar, enriched flour, white rice, pasteurized and homogenized dairy products, luncheon meat, artificial sweeteners, foods that contain artificial colorings and flavorings, monosodium glutamate (MSG), canned foods, and processed foods containing ingredients that can&#8217;t be pronounced.  If a health food store is available, it is best to shop there than to shop at a regular grocery store.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>◦                <strong>Minimize or Eliminate Meat:</strong></p>
<p>Meat includes both red meat, white meat and fish:</p>
<p>Beef (ground beef, hamburger meat, steak, steak tartare, sirloin, filet mignon, beef broth, beef boullion, veal, corned beef)</p>
<p>Poultry (turkey, chicken, chicken broth, chicken boullion, duck, Cornish hen, wild game, etc.)</p>
<p>Fish and Seafood (lobster, shrimp, scallops, molluscs, shark, swordfish, trout, salmon, halibut, sushi, eel, squid, oysters, etc.)</p>
<p>Pork (ham, bacon, pork rinds, pork chops, ham hocks, pork sausage)</p>
<p>Organ meats (pates, kidneys, liver, sweetbreads, tripe, giblets, giblet gravy, etc.),</p>
<p>Processed meat (hot dogs, frankfurters, salami, bologna, pepperoni, sausage, bratwurst, canned spreadable meat, etc.)</p>
<p>Other meats: lamb, lamb chops, buffalo, venison, snake, frog, and anything else that had muscles and/or a face</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If meat is to be eaten, it should only be eaten once or twice a week.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>America&#8217;s annual meat consumption has risen dramatically, as well as their rates of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. According to the USDA Agriculture Fact Book (2001-2002), America&#8217;s total meat consumption (including red meat, poultry and fish) in the year 2000, reached 195 pounds per person &#8211; a whopping 57 pounds above the average annual consumption in the 1950&#8242;s. In all, Americans consumed about 7 pounds more red meat, 46 pounds more poultry and 4 pounds more fish and shellfish than in the 1950s. This is far too much protein!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Amy Jamieson-Petonic, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association and an employee wellness manager for the Cleveland Clinic, says many people don&#8217;t realize that the body can&#8217;t store protein. If you consume more than you need, you&#8217;ll just eliminate it through your urine and put an extra strain on your kidneys to metabolize it.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&#8220;Would we all be better off if we dramatically reduced meat to the point of one meal a week? I would say yes,&#8221; says Dr. Bob Lawrence, director of the Center for a Livable Future at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The regular consumption of meats of all kinds (even organic or free-range meats) have been proven time and time again in research study after research study to cause many health problems including acne, increased risk of cancer (especially colon, prostate and breast cancer), constipation, diabetes, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, fibroid tumors of the uterus, food poisoning, intestinal flu, obesity, gallstones, gouty arthritis, heart disease, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hormonal imbalances, increased hostility, acute indigestion, irritability, kidney stones, worsening of kidney diseases, premature aging of the kidneys, worsening of liver diseases, mercury and arsenic poisoning (fish and seafood), osteoporosis, enlarged prostate (BPH), premature puberty, parasite infections, stroke, and many types of colon and rectal diseases. All meats, even if organic and free range, are still very high in protein, and because of this, they are still acidic in the body, although less dangerous to consume than conventional meats sold at regular grocery stores.</p>

<p>◦                <strong>Minimize or Eliminate Dairy Products:</strong></p>
<p>Dairy products (especially homogenized, pasteurized cow&#8217;s milk) are not as acidic as meat, but they are acidic in the body and can aggravate colitis, asthma, childhood ear infections,sinus infections, COPD, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, lung diseases, psoriasis, acne, eczema, and many skin and colon diseases.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>Milk allergy is a very common food allergy and many people are lactose intolerant- including people who are Blood Type B &#8211; supposedly the Blood type that can digest dairy products. I&#8217;ve never found a person who had a Type B blood type that did well on dairy products.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>The consumption of dairy products has been found in research studies to be the most common cause of constipation in children.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>If symptoms are caused by dairy products, or if suffering from any lung or intestinal ailment, they should be eliminated.   Otherwise, for most healthy people, reducing intake of dairy products should be sufficient.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>High calcium foods can be substituted such as beans (<em>all</em> beans are high in calcium &#8211; soy beans are not the only beans that contain calcium!), seaweeds, kale, broccoli, almonds, and carrot juice, or the herbal <strong>Calcium Formula</strong>. If there is a soy allergy, one can easily substitute other types of beans to meet calcium and protein needs.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>The least acidic type of dairy products are raw milk from goats and sheep. There is a slight risk of serious bacteria infection that can be caused by the consumption of raw milk, so caution is advised with raw dairy products, especially in people who have a weak, underdeveloped or compromised immune system &#8211; the elderly, infants, HIV/AIDS patients, bone marrow transplant recipients, patients undergoing radiation therapy or cancer chemotherapy, or patients taking immunosuppressive medications.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>◦                <strong>Testing Urine pH</strong></p>
<p>The urine pH is a good general indicator of the total body pH. According to Carey Reams, a biochemist who tested thousands upon thousands of people in various stages of life in disease and in health, the urine pH of a healthy person is 6.4. The urine should be slightly acid because the body is always eliminating a small amount of acid that is generated by normal metabolism. However, when a person undergoes an herbal detoxification program, the urine pH can vary widely.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>The urine pH can turn too alkaline when the kidneys are not doing their job of eliminating acids and can be a sign of kidney disease. However, the urine pH can also turn too alkaline when the liver is being cleansed and the person doing the liver cleanse has no kidney problems at all.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>The liver produces bile containing highly alkaline digestive enzymes. When the liver is being cleansed, it can release large amounts of old accumulated toxic bile. This can temporarily turn the urine pH too alkaline.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>On the other hand, the body can release large amounts of stored up acid wastes, and these will end up in the urine, turning it too acid. This situation can make it look like a person is not doing well on an alkaline diet, when in fact, they are doing very well and their body is healing.</p>
<p>◦</p>
<p>So, during a healing and detoxification program, one should not be discouraged by an overly high or low urine pH. We look for broad general trends instead. Charting the first morning urine every day over a month&#8217;s time and even over several months gives us more of a trend that is more accurate than a single high or low reading.</p>
<p><strong>Healthy Lifestyle Makes a Difference </strong> Getting healthy does not have to be complicated.  What I have found in my practice is that healthy lifestyle habits go a long way.  Most of us have not been taught these healthy lifestyle habits.  We have been brought up with processed, denatured foods and many synthetic chemicals, and all of the experts tell us that this is &#8220;normal.&#8221;  What&#8217;s even more confusing is when we hear medical doctors telling us that diet doesn&#8217;t matter.  However, my clinical experience has shown me that it DOES matter.  Adequate rest, stress reduction and regular exercise can be major factors in determining whether or not someone gets well or gets worse.  Many chronic insomniacs and those suffering from clinical depression have overcome their problem merely by taking up a regular exercise program.</p>
<p><strong>Healing Reactions Versus Allergic Reactions: </strong>Whenever a person makes enough positive changes in diet and/or herbs so that the body releases toxins, those toxins can sometimes be felt as a &#8220;healing reaction.&#8221;  A healing reaction is NOT the same thing as a side effect of a medication.  A healing reaction can feel uncomfortable, but it is actually a sign that the body is healing itself.  As toxic wastes are released from fat cells, liver cells, brain cells, kidneys, and other organs, they go into the bloodstream.  Sometimes during herbal therapy, people can taste in their mouth drugs that they have not taken in many years.  This is an indication that old medication residues have been released and are now working their way out of the body.  Many symptoms from the past can temporarily reappear during an herbal cleansing program &#8211; fatigue, joint pains, muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, weakness, itching, etc. This is nothing to be concerned about, but rather something to be glad about.</p>
<p>A healing reaction is usually easy to recognize. Initially, symptoms begin to feel better. We feel better and have more energy. During this time, the body is gathering vital energy. It is this energy that the body is going to use to cleanse and heal itself. Enzyme systems are activated, including not just digestive enzymes, but the very important metabolic enzymes, such as the P-450 enzyme system, the cytochrome oxidase system and glutathione. These enzymes are responsible for dissolving any foreign substances in the body. With this newfound strength and energy, the body then does what it needs to do in order to get disease out of the way. It&#8217;s not always pretty or pleasant, but it is absolutely crucial for healing. The enzymes begin to dissolve, stones, calcium deposits, tumors, bile sludge and other wastes. Suddenly,we begin to feel badly again &#8211; or even worse than we did originally. This is a classic healing reaction, and it is wonderful! Finally we are able to get into a sick, diseased area that we couldn&#8217;t reach before with weak, mass marketed products. If we don&#8217;t stop, but keep on going, we will eventually get to the end of it and be healed once and for all.</p>
<p>On the other hand, it is not necessary to have severe healing reactions when we are usually able to reduce them through the use of intestinal cleansing formulas.  This is why the first step in any herbal cleansing program is to cleanse the intestines.  This makes way for more advanced herbal healing that might otherwise be very uncomfortable and filled with intense healing reactions.  If taking an herbal formula or green nutritional formula, and unpleasant symptoms occur, it is most likely NOT an allergy, but a healing reaction.  In this case, it is important to do the intestinal cleansing formulas more and/or reduce the dose of the formula that caused the problem so that the detoxification happens more slowly and is better tolerated.</p>
<p>I knew one lady who had a severe skin disease with multiple boils all over her body that appeared from time to time.  She drank a spirulina smoothie at the health food store, and broke out in boils all over again.  The spirulina was simply too strong for her to take at that particular time since she had not first begun with intestinal cleansing.  Whenever the intestines contain large amounts of toxins, the body will try to rid itself of toxins in other ways besides through the colon.  This usually ends up being a detoxification through the skin which can be very uncomfortable.  This is avoidable if intestinal cleansing is done first.  After a thorough intestinal cleansing, one should be able to handle strong detoxifying substances such as spirulina and other herbs without their causing any discomfort</p>
<p>In the case of severe or chronic disease, there may be multiple healing reactions or reactions that are more prolonged. In these cases, it is important NOT TO STOP in the middle of the cleansing process, otherwise, the healing benefits stop and the health issue never clears up. Most people grossly underestimate the amount of toxins in their bodies. They are impatient to get out of pain when they should be focused on cleansing away the toxins that are causing the pain. Any doctor can prescribe pain medication that relieves pain; however, pain relievers do not cure health issues, but merely force them deeper into the body while giving a false sense of security. Meanwhile, disease continues to worsen unless we have the courage to follow through on a program, experience some unpleasantness while the body is cleansing and readjusting itself. Toxins do not simply evaporate; they must come out of the body. We cannot expect it to be a walk in the park. However, when the cleansing process is completed, people finally regain their health, strength and vitality.</p>
<p>Rarely, allergic reactions do occur.  Some people are so allergic to peanuts that they cannot even inhale the aroma of peanuts on an airplane or they will have a severe allergic reaction.  For people who have a tendency toward severe allergies, it is best to use small amounts of herbs when trying them for the first time, and always cleanse the bowel first.  It is said that people who are allergic to ragweed should not have chamomile since they are in the same plant family.  However, I&#8217;ve been severely allergic to ragweed my entire life, and I&#8217;ve consumed plenty of chamomile without having an allergic reaction at all.  On the other hand, there is one case in the medical literature that describes a woman with a ragweed allergy who consumed chamomile tea and had an allergic reaction.  So, individual reactions can vary and caution still applies here.  Allergies in general are mostly due to internal toxicity that overloads the ability of the immune system to function properly.  The adrenals are typically weak along with the kidneys, liver and the entire endocrine system.  When these areas of the body are cleansed and nourished, allergic reactions usually greatly diminish or disappear. We have had one client who had severe anaphylactic reactions to vinegar. After completing one liver cleanse routine, he was no longer allergic to vinegar, and had no further anaphylactic reactions.</p>

<p>When health begins to decline, usually the first thing people try are supplements.  When one supplement doesn&#8217;t work, then a person usually tries another. And on and on it goes &#8211; the supplement roller coaster. Each supplement is supposedly more &#8220;miraculous&#8221; than the other. This supplement worked for Auntie Mae, or this one worked for cousin George. In a random fashion, people often compose a health program such as this for themselves. These often fail. Meanwhile, the truly powerful healing techniques such as juice fasting are ignored. In my clinical practice, what I have found is that juice fasting is THE quickest, most effective way to heal from almost any health issue. Doing a juicing program makes every other natural method work faster: massage therapy works faster for fibromyalgia, acupuncture works faster for pain, energy healing is accelerated, herbs work better, etc.  It&#8217;s so easy, you can do it in the privacy of your own home, or even take juices to work with you.</p>

<p>Juicing Helps Incurable Diseases:</p>
<p>I have used it as a healing technique for those with pain, cancer, depression, arthritis, severe infections that failed antibiotics, autoimmune diseases and many other supposedly incurable diseases. The results were nothing short of miraculous. The most amazing result I&#8217;ve seen from juice fasting was with a lady who came to see me with the classic symptoms of multiple sclerosis. She had struggled with this disease for three years straight, remaining symptomatic constantly throughout that time with a page long list of severe symptoms. She walked with great difficulty with the help of a cane, barely able to make it up the three steps to get into my office. She agreed to do a juice fast for a few days, and I urged her to continue with it for a full week.  Although there were doubts that this &#8220;juicing&#8221; would make any kind of difference at all, she began to discover other sources that confirmed the powerful healing effects of juicing therapy. <p>Well, technically, its&#8217;s not a juice FAST. A fast implies that one consumes no food or water. However, during a juice fast, one is consuming plenty of food.  However, that food just happens to be in liquid form only. Therefore, it allows a person to get the maximum amount of nutrition while still allowing the digestive organs time to rest and heal. A juice fast is a liquid, nourishing diet consisting of solely juices and water. There is no restriction on the amount of juice that can be consumed. Therefore, it should not happen that one feels hungry during a juice fast. In fact, one should feel quite satisfied. But the most noticeable effect is that of feeling lighter and more energetic. Many natural healers have combined periods of juice fasting with certain supplements which potentiate and speed up the benefits of the fast.</p>

<p>It is VERY important to read this entire article before attempting a juice fast on your own. Some people feel badly due to poorly planned juice fasts, and there are many inferior healing routines floating around out there that can make some people feel worse. I&#8217;ve received some emails from people who tried juice fasts where only 6 glasses of juices per day were allowed &#8211; and they felt lousy the entire time. I&#8217;ve had others write me who attempted water fasting and felt worse than when they started. Others skipped the colon cleansing formulas and were detoxing weeks later instead of feeling better immediately. To avoid these problems, follow the entire juicing program outlined in this article, or go to a juicing retreat where an experienced professional can help you. It is very important to read the next section on caring for the colon during a juice fast.</p>

<p>During a juice fast, since there is no solid food ingested, the bowel does not have any fiber to work against; therefore, the bowels stop moving.  When the bowels don&#8217;t move and a person keeps juicing, there are many toxins that are released into the bloodstream, and they can&#8217;t get out of the body. This feels absolutely terrible!  Next, instead of being released from the body, many of them can be reabsorbed back into the tissues.   This can be completely avoided simply by taking the intestinal cleansing formulas listed below.  The bowels can eliminate three or more pounds of toxins per day &#8211; this is a very important elimination organ! We need the bowels to move, so that the toxins can be released from the body. These recommendations are very important.</p>

<p>During each day of the juice fast, take an herbal laxative at night, and also first thing in the morning if needed. Herbal formulas work well to keep the bowel moving &#8211; I use the Vibrant Colon Formula for this. For very constipated individuals who usually only have a bowel movement every few days or less, I use an extra strength formula called the Colon Starter Plus. If you take lots of strong cayenne and/or juice a garlic clove with one or more of your vegetable juices, you might not need either of these formulas.  Anyone who has active colitis or a history of colitis should not take any laxative formulas, cayenne or garlic.</p>
<p>Take an herbal formula that absorbs and draws toxins out of the bowel:These formulas usually contain charcoal, bentonite clay, and sometimes slippery elm and other herbs. I use the Colon Detox Caps or the Colon Soothe Formula for this and they work very well. They contain mucilaginous herbs such as slippery elm to protect and soothe the colon, and are much gentler than psyllium husks. Plain psyllium husks, even if combined with bentonite and charcoal, can be very abrasive and cause severe diarrhea in those who are sensitive. I&#8217;ve seen psyllium husks cause severe intestinal inflammation and bleeding in those with sensitive colons, so it&#8217;s VERY important to choose well balanced gentle intestinal formulas containing mucilaginous herbs such as the ones listed above.</p>
<p>I cannot guarantee the safety or effectiveness of herbal products that are not mentioned on this website. When people attempt herbal cleanses from a drug store or discount herb shop using similar formulas, the results are usually weaker, or can even cause unpleasant symptoms. Many years of research and clinical experience go into this program and my herbal products, both of which have been based on results, not theories.</p>
<p>Make sure to drink at least a gallon of fluid every day. This can include herbal teas and water and not just juice. The colon needs around two quarts a day to function properly &#8211; it needs more when taking herbs or doing other sorts of natural healing methods. A gallon of fluids per day will give the kidneys ample opportunity to eliminate the toxins that are coming loose and going into the bloodstream and make the cleanse comfortable. The kidneys filter toxins out of the bloodstream and naturally release them into the urine.</p>
<p>Many people do an enema once or twice a day. Except in cases of severe disease, this is usually not needed as long as one is taking the above-mentioned herbal intestinal cleansing formulas.</p>
<p>Other important additions to maximize the</p>
<p>benefits of a juice fast:</p>
<p>1) Cayenne &#8211; cayenne gives energy and helps dissolve mucous, stops bleeding in the intestines, hemorrhaging of the uterus, and bleeding in other organs. It dissolves blood clots, and increases circulation to the head, making it invaluable for use in strokes and senility such as Alzheimer&#8217;s and other forms of dementia. Start with 1/8 tsp of 150,000 Heat Units Cayenne once a day. Very gradually work up to one tsp three times per day. For Cayenne Tincture, start with five to ten drops, and work up to one dropperful (30-35 drops) three times per day.  If you can handle it, take even more &#8211; but do it slowly and gradually. The body does gradually adapt and is able to handle larger doses over time. For weaker cayenne, it&#8217;s necessary to take much more to get the same effect. Powdered encapsulated cayenne that has had the &#8220;heat&#8221; removed from it is about the weakest cayenne available and doesn&#8217;t do much.  Don&#8217;t expect it heal anything serious. The hotter the cayenne, the more it heals. Take strong cayenne with juice &#8211; don&#8217;t take it on an empty stomach or you will be sorry &#8211; intense intestinal cramping can result from doing this.</p>

<p>2) Algae &#8211; Spirulina, Chlorella, blue green algae, and Dunaliella (red algae) are the four major edible kinds of algae. People have been consuming certain types of algae as food for thousands of years.  Algaes have been found to contain all of the essential amino acids. They are a complete protein source second to none. The protein content of algaes range from 60-70% with a very high protein utilization factor. This means that the body is easily able to absorb and use the protein contained in algae. Algae usually comes in a powder form, or in tablets or capsules. Begin with 1/2 tsp of the powdered algae per day and increase to whatever dose feels right. Otherwise, follow directions on the supplement bottle.  For people who don&#8217;t like the taste of the powder or liquid, capsules are the next best way to take algae. The least desirable method is tablets since they are highly compressed, making them more difficult to digest and absorb. The Essential Nutrients contains most of the supplements mentioned in this article, combined together into a convenient formula that saves a lot of time and makes juice fasting much easier and even fun.</p>

<p>3) Nutritional yeast &#8211; Saccharomyces cerevisiae &#8211; yeast is very high in B vitamins including B12. The kind I like is Red Star T6635 #12 Large flake. I&#8217;ve seen it sold in bulk at the health food store as well as in the supplement section.  People who have gout shouldn&#8217;t not take yeast since the high protein content may aggravate gout. Start with 1 TBS per day and increase to 2 or more TBS per day if that feels right.  Since nutritional yeast is so high in B vitamins, and the nervous system requires so much of them to function properly, this makes an excellent food for the brain, peripheral nerves, and spinal cord. Those with nervous system disorders such as myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, brain diseases such as Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, premature senility, all types of dementia, schizophrenia, Tourette&#8217;s syndrome, and other neurologic diseases may want to increase their dose as needed.  People with milder neurologic problems such as anxiety, depression, mental and emotional disorders will benefit, too.  This yeast is also contained in the Earth&#8217;s Nutrition Formula. Essential Nutrients is very similar but is yeast free and designed to accomodate those with Candida and yeast problems.</p>

<p>6) Herbal teas &#8211; The herbal tea I use the most for this purpose is Detox Chai Spice since it activates all the organs at once and greatly assists in removing toxins from the body. If there is a history of kidney stones, the K/B Herbal Tea is an excellent choice that assists in cleansing stone-causing residues from the urinary tract. If one does not normally consume caffeinated products, it is unwise to drink strongly stimulating herbal teas (green tea, ma huang or ephedra). Although sometimes green tea does not contain much caffeine, there are many types that contain just as much caffeine as regular black tea.  People shouldn&#8217;t drink teas from these three stimulating herbs except in the case of severe asthma, in which case they may provide needed symptom relief in an acute situation. However, remember that regularly taking a stimulant and then suddenly stopping it can result in withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, depression, low blood pressure and possibly fainting. So, if coffee is normally consumed on a regular basis, switching over to caffeinated green tea during a juice cleanse can help avoid caffeine withdrawal symptoms.</p>

<p>7) Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (Braggs and Spectrum are good brands usually found in health food stores). Apple cider vinegar is especially good for arthritis &#8211; it helps to wash and dissolve calcium deposits from joints and muscles and balances body pH.  Start with one Tablespoon three times per day and increase to as much as you feel you need. A great apple cider vinegar formula to take at this time is Germ Blaster. The cayenne, ginger, garlic and onion in this formula greatly stimulate the circulation all over the entire body.  These herbs also kill many germs and parasites, making this a great formula to use to speed up recovery from a cold, flu, bronchitis, or any other type of infection. The horseradish content is excellent for clearing out sinuses. The cayenne, garlic and ginger should not be taken by those who have acute or chronic diarrhea since they can activate the intestines.  For those who are usually constipated, it&#8217;s wonderful.</p>

<p>How to do a juice fast:</p>
<p>How much juice should a person drink during a juice fast? Many people make the mistake of not drinking enough juice. Not drinking enough juice can cause very unpleasant healing reactions and ravenous hunger. This is not about hunger or deprivation &#8211; this is about nourishing and healing the body. Drink as much juice as is desired. Drink at least a gallon per day, and more if there is hunger. If there is hunger, it means not enough juice is being consumed.  Ideally, it should actually feel as if one is drinking TOO MUCH juice.  Again, this is truly a juice &#8220;flush,&#8221; not a fast.</p>

<p>What juices are best to drink?</p>

<p>Greens &#8211; parsley, kale, beet greens, chard, spinach, dandelion leaf</p>

<p>Since juices are concentrates, dilute all juices with an equal amount of water. I typically do not recommend an all fruit juice fast.  Diabetics should juice fast on diluted vegetable juices only and not on fruit juices.</p>

<p>It is easy to make fruit juice combinations that taste good. It is a bit more challenging to make vegetables taste good. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to get some good juicing recipe books. A good juicing recipe book takes all the guesswork out of making juice combinations taste good. Consult some recipe books for juice fasting. Michael Murray&#8217;s The Complete Book of Juicing contains many recipes for delicious juices. If you&#8217;ve made a vegetable combination that doesn&#8217;t taste good, add carrot and/or apple juice to it. Most of the time, that will make the juice palatable enough to drink, and sometimes, you even end up with a great-tasting combo!</p>

<p>What juicer should I get?</p>
<p>It depends on what you want and how much one is willing to spend. The Champion Juicer has a large motor which practically never wears out. I&#8217;ve known people who have had their Champion juicer for over 25 years. The great thing about the Champion is that it is so easy to clean. It also has a homogenizer attachment that makes nut butters, frozen fruit desserts, and pates possible to make. It retails for around $249.95. The Champion does a good job with most juices except wheatgrass and delicate stems. I had one of these for many years, and I liked it because it was so quick to clean. But I couldn&#8217;t juice delicate greens very well with it. For that, people need a wheatgrass juicer, a Green Power Juicer or Green Life Juicer which retails from $449 to $550. These juicers can handle wheatgrass as well as delicate greens and vegetables. I have one of these and it juices everything. It takes a little longer to clean, but I like it because it juices leafy green veggies, and the juice yield is so high. Everyone knows how emphatic I am about the importance of leafy green veggie juices for healing. Another less pricey juicer is the Omega 4000 which retails for around $300. One of my friends has the Breville Juice Fountain Elite juicer and he loves it because he hardly has to do any chopping of his fruits and vegetables because the opening to the juicer is so large. The amount of time it saves him is an incentive to juice more often. It retails for about $399, and the less deluxe model is the Juice Fountain Plus which retails for around $250.</p>

<p>What other types of fasts are there?</p>

<p>Mono Diet Fast:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>During a mono diet cleanse, only one type of food is consumed during a period of time. Probably the most famous and successful one is the grape diet. Persons on this diet are encouraged to drink as much grape juice and consume as many grapes (plus the grape skins and seeds) as desired. This method was popularized by a woman who healed herself of cancer using this diet.</p>

<p>The Lemonade Diet:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This cleansing diet was used by Wyatt Earp and later by Stanley Burroughs as a very effective way to detoxify the body using fresh lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and water. This is a good cleanse with one minor problem: the salt flush. I have tried this one and I have had friends who&#8217;ve tried it as well.  Within 1/2 hour of consuming the salt mixture, an osmotic diarrhea occurs. This is felt as a watery, often uncontrollable diarrhea. This diarrhea can cause electrolyte depletion, cause palpitations and can be dangerous for those who are taking heart medication. The salt flush is not the only way to cleanse the colon. Good herbal colon cleansing formulas such as the Vibrant Colon Formula and the Colon Detox Caps can easily take the place of the salt flush &#8211; and the good news is that when using the herbal formulas, no one has to rush to the bathroom with watery diarrhea.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve had clients do the Intestinal Rejuvenation Program (Vibrant Colon + Colon Detox Caps) instead of the salt flush and laxative tea and it worked extremely well. In fact, in one client, the hardened mucoid layer sloughed off of the colon lining in only 3 days instead of the 10 days that is normally expected when doing the lemonade diet as originally recommended by Stanley Burroughs.</p>

<p>I must caution people about doing the lemonade diet since it is a stronger cleanse, and this makes it mandatory to do the colon cleansing portion. We&#8217;ve had an acquaintance who had heard about the Stanley Burrough&#8217;s lemonade diet and started doing it. However, he did nothing to care for his colon during this time, except to drink a laxative tea once or twice during the week. No salt flush, no Vibrant Colon, and no Colon Detox Caps. He lost weight quickly (which was wonderful), but the fats that were being released during his weight loss overwhelmed his liver and without the absorptive colon formula to soak them up from the intestines before they recirculated back to the liver (enterohepatic recycling), they stayed in the liver and gallbladder and caused gallstones. He ended up in the emergency room. There, they asked him, &#8220;Have you lost a lot of weight recently? Rapid weight loss is associated with gallstones.&#8221;</p>

<p>The bile must flow freely during the lemonade diet, otherwise gallstones can form. Therefore, please take your herbal intestinal formulas to prevent this from happening! <p>During a water fast, only water is consumed. This method is preferred by adherents of Natural Hygiene who insist it is the only true method of fasting.  It is a dramatic fast, and cannot be extended for long periods of time (1 &#8211; 2 weeks) without adverse effects. Although it has been effective for some when done for very short periods of time, I usually find the cleanse to be too &#8220;rough&#8221; for most people to handle. Some people have reported that they never gained back their energy after doing a water fast. I do not recommend water fasting because there is a chance that it could cause damage due to lack of nutrients and a too rapid detoxification. Without nutrients, the body begins to break down toxins, and this is beneficial in the short term. However, there is a point where energy reserves from fat are used up and the body begins to break down muscle tissue for energy. Years ago, a patient of mine refused to have anything to do with juice fasting because her previously healthy brother in his 20&#8242;s had died during an extended water fast at a water fasting retreat. She was told that his heart had suddenly and inexplicably stopped. There was no history of heart problems or any history in the family of heart problems, so this was a complete shock to the family. Some extremists have caused irreparable harm to patients by refusing to give any enemas or herbs to move the colon because of a false belief that that enemas are unnatural and one shouldn&#8217;t reverse the movements of the intestines. Because of this, the rapid detox overloaded the body and caused kidney damage. There have been many reports of kidney damage caused by extended water fasts. These misguided beliefs cause harm.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>A Juice fast, on the other hand, is very safe, and I have never seen anyone experience a bad outcome from doing a juicing routine. In fact, I normally see a very therapeutic response which is very exciting. One of the reasons why is because we are not depriving the body of calories, but simply putting the nutrition into the body in liquid form instead of solid form.  A caveat here is in the case of diabetes. I do not put diabetics on juice fasts because we cannot control the blood sugar response, especially to fruit juices. They can have green leafy veggie juices without a problem &#8211; incorporating these juices into their daily diet, but a juice fast in this case, in my opinion, should really be supervised.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>How will I get enough protein?</p>
<p>When people do my juice program exactly as I have outlined and take the above supplements, there is no chance of not getting enough protein.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Remember this is not a fast during which there is starvation.  This is a flush, during which the body typically receives more nutrition than when solid food is eaten.  It is easier for the body to extract nutrients from liquids than it is to digest solid foods to get their nutrients out.  There are plenty of nutrients consumed during this juice flush, especially if one drinks at least a gallon a day of juice, and uses algae and nutritional yeast.  When the body is healing itself, this is a sign that it is getting even MORE nutrition than it needs. Whenever the body gets more nutrients than it needs, it will use those nutrients to heal.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The average American typically eats too much protein on a daily basis.  He or she has animal protein for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It is rare to find an entire culture based on this incredibly high amount of protein in the diet.  The human body is not designed to digest and assimilate this much protein; therefore, it is left undigested in the body and often stored away in the form of tumors &#8211; both benign and cancerous. The excess protein also acidifies the body, making it more likely to attract illness, and increasing pain in the body. And finally, excess protein must be eliminated through the kidneys, and research shows that excess protein consumption can actually damage the kidneys &#8211; and sometimes permanently. We all need to rethink our beliefs about protein, most of which have to come to us through the meat and dairy industry propaganda sales tools.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Those who feel the slightest bit squeamish about not getting enough protein during a juice fast can take a double dose (four tablespoons) of Essential Nutrients per day.  The algae content is 60-70% usable protein that contains all of the essential amino acids. This is much higher than the percent protein in beef (which is only 22%), or eggs (12%) or milk (3%). When taking either of these formulas, there is no way to get protein deficient.</p>

<p>What if my problem/condition gets worse?</p>
<p>In cases of arthritis, fibromyalgia and other painful conditions, it may get worse temporarily before it gets better. This is normal, expected, and is a good sign that the fast is working to cleanse the body. It will pass in a few days, and after that time, the pain will most likely be better than it was before starting the fast.  If the colon is ignored during juicing, these reactions can last longer. It is very important to have bowel movements every day in order to avoid these unpleasant healing reactions. Please see section on herbal colon cleansing formulas.</p>

<p>I know my body &#8211; I can&#8217;t do that!</p>
<p>If people really knew their body and were completely in tune with it, they would not be sick.  How does one know if he or she can do something until that person is in the middle of doing it? I&#8217;ve put many a person on a juice fast who swore to me that they couldn&#8217;t do it. They came through it just fine, and were amazed that they felt so much energy during it.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Won&#8217;t I feel weak?  I&#8217;m too weak to do a juice fast!</p>
<p>Most people don&#8217;t realize that a juice fast will provide even more energy than they normally have.  I&#8217;ve also put people who were bedridden with bodies full of cancer on a juice fast and it helped them tremendously, and got many of them out of bed.  I&#8217;ve never found a person who was too weak to do a juice fast. Juice fasting is a time when the mind is stimulated and all sorts of creative ideas flow. It is the perfect method to use to unleash creativity for artists, musicians, actors, writers and any other sort of creative profession. It takes 30% of the body&#8217;s entire energy to digest food. This is a lot of energy!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When one does not have to digest solid food, one has this much more energy in the body with which to heal. Since the body is always moving towards health, it will use this energy to bring itself back into balance. It will do things such as dissolve calcium deposits in the joints, release toxins stored in the liver, kidneys, muscles, and fat. It will dissolve scar tissue in the body, and begin to regenerate and clean up aging, injured and infected organs. Since juice is so full of enzymes, the body does not need to use up extra energy to create enzymes to digest it. Instead of digestive enzymes, the body will manufacture other types of enzymes that it can use to break up deposits and toxins settled in the tissues.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t do a juice fast &#8211; I&#8217;m hypoglycemic</p>
<p>So was I. In fact, I had extreme sugar highs and lows while eating a normal diet. When my blood sugar would go low, I would be on the ground unconscious. And when I was unconscious, I would have seizures. Yet, when I did juice fasting, this did not happen.  When people do the juice fast as directed, they are almost constantly drinking juice. They drink juice every hour.  When they do it this way, they are continuously giving their body more carbohydrates, and it is impossible for the blood sugar to go too low.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>An important situation in which to be cautious about doing a juice fast would be in cases of diabetes or in someone who has ever passed out from low blood sugar &#8211; this is rare and usually only the case in diabetes. (In cases of  diabetes, I would strongly recommend a SUPERVISED vegetable juice fast, with frequent monitoring of the blood sugar &#8211; the high blood sugar problem can go away so quickly that the regular dose of insulin or other blood sugar-lowering medication can make the blood sugar go too low.)  Diabetics can also experience blood sugar peaks, so it is important for them to monitor the blood sugar frequently during a juice fast. If juicing cannot be done in cases of diabetes, then the next best thing is a completely raw, vegan diet.  People who are not diabetic do not need to monitor their blood sugar, since their blood sugar control mechanisms are functioning fine, and they do not have problems juicing.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Now, people sometimes have short periods of tiredness in the midst of the energy because the body is doing all of this cleansing work.  Old solid toxins that had previously settled in the fat cells, liver, kidneys, brain, pancreas, muscles, joints and bones are being liquefied and released into the bloodstream to be removed.  This feeling of tiredness is commonly misinterpreted as a blood sugar low.  It is NOT.  This &#8220;healing reaction&#8221; as it is commonly called can be greatly relieved by giving extra attention to the elimination organs as mentioned above. This makes the juicing program go much more smoothly and comfortably. Also, even more energy comes from taking the Essential Nutrients Formula and/or the Cayenne during a juice fast.</p>

<p>Will I lose weight?</p>
<p>Juice fasting is a great balancer &#8211; it will help the body to get back in balance &#8211; whichever way that is. The answer is yes, if one is in need of losing weight. When one is very thin and underweight,  it is better to drink the juices undiluted. In these cases, in people who needed to gain weight, I&#8217;ve known them to gain it. People are usually underweight because they cannot absorb nutrients from their food &#8211; even if they are eating large amounts of food.  Juice fasting is a fool proof way to make sure the digestive system  absorbs the highest amount of nutrients from food. To increase the nutrient levels even more, consume two tablespoons of Essential Nutrients twice daily.</p>

<p>Will I lose too much weight?</p>
<p>In cases of severe toxicity, the body must break down many toxins before it can get to the task of rebuilding the body. Sometimes we see that cancer patients lose a lot of weight during a juice fast. This is temporary and nothing to be alarmed about, but it can be quite dramatic. Cancer patients typically lose a lot of weight even when they are on a diet full of cheeseburgers, steak and fried chicken. In fact, they usually have cancer because they have eaten these highly toxic foods their whole life. Medical doctors fret over this and usually prescribe a diet of very fatty and unhealthy foods. It usually never works to help the patient gain weight, but usually always succeeds in making the patient constipated and even more toxic.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Cancer patients lose weight because cancer is a degenerative disease. The body is breaking itself down because the metabolism is so deranged that these patients cannot digest or assimilate even the simplest of foods &#8211; much less fried foods or hamburgers! The technical term for this is cachexia. Cachexia is sometimes also called &#8220;wasting disease,&#8221; and is a direct result of the severe toxicity that occurs in cancer, NOT from juicing. The DISEASE cancer causes people to lose too much weight even if they never did a juice fast.  When the body is cleansed sufficiently, the cachexia reverses, and it will then be possible to put on weight &#8211; but it&#8217;s not possible to do this beforehand. If one DOESN&#8217;T do any juicing, it may not be possible to detoxify the body enough to reverse the cancer, and the chemotherapy often fails.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t have time to juice fast</p>
<p>Neither do I, but I still do it.  Ideally, one should make the juices fresh and drink them immediately. Juice contains the most healing nutrients just after juicing. However, if one needs to leave the house, it is acceptable to make extra juice and bring it along in a container. When people know they&#8217;ll be gone for a while, they pack it in a cooler. This does not have to be difficult. If you forget to bring juice with you, go by a juice bar, and have them make it for you. This is a nice break from making the juice yourself. I&#8217;ve even known people to get great results from drinking store-bought bottled juices, (make sure it is 100% juice) so no one gets away with using the excuse that he or she doesn&#8217;t have time to do a juice fast. With a little planning, everything should happen without a hitch.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When people are severely ill and need to juice fast and they give me this excuse, I tell them to get out of my office.  I tell them, &#8220;Stop wasting my time and yours. If you don&#8217;t have time to get well, go to a medical doctor who will surgically remove whatever organ in your body is sick. Don&#8217;t complain when you don&#8217;t have any organs left because you didn&#8217;t take the time to take care of yourself.&#8221; I have had some clients who didn&#8217;t have time to take herbal supplements, either. They continued to get sicker and sicker while they DIDN&#8217;T follow my programs.  Many of them died. Some of them resorted to surgery. The time to do a health program is NOW, not when you think you&#8217;ll be ready. If you wait until you&#8217;re ready, you might end up in the hospital with your health condition because you waited so long to do anything about it. At this point, it is sometimes too late. Don&#8217;t wait &#8211; do it now!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>How long do I juice fast? How often should I juice fast?</p>
<p>One option is to fast one day a week. Another option is to fast for three to five days per month. Some people do long fasts &#8211; sometimes up to a month of juice fasting, once a year. These options are all good for maintenance and for some extra housecleaning of the body. For more serious or life-threatening situations, more juice fasting may be indicated. (NOT water fasting) For a cold or flu, the first thing to do is fast. Juice fast until it&#8217;s gone. This works usually within the first 24 hours, but may need to be extended to three to four days if the cold or flu has already settled in for longer than a day before beginning to juice. If needed for severe toxicity, the juice fast can be extended until it is felt that it is time to stop. The body usually lets us know when it is time to stop.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The last juice fast I did lasted 63 days. I did this to prove to people that juicing is completely safe and extremely therapeutic when done correctly. During this time, I felt energetic, clear-headed, creative and I was teaching yoga classes.  No one knew I was juicing if I didn&#8217;t tell them. Not everyone needs to do a juice fast for this long, and even just a day or two of juice fasting can have wonderful effects. If there is a severe degenerative disease in the body, it is even more powerful to take detoxifying herbs during the juice fast. <p>Will it work for acute situations?</p>

Sugar is the primary cause of diabetes and why we&#8217;re a nation facing an obesity epidemic. Simply stated, excess sugar consumption is destroying your health.</p>
<p>Just over 100 years ago, the average American consumed 18 pounds of sugar per year. Today that number has risen to <span style="text-decoration: underline;">152 – 168 pounds per person – per year</span>. Clearly, we&#8217;re consuming sugar as if it were a health food with damaging health effects.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Cravings exist in both the body and the mind, and you will have the best luck overcoming them if you address both simultaneously.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The first step is good nutrition. A nourished body is a happy body, and permanently kicking a sugar habit requires healthy food.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Healthy eating will not squelch cravings overnight, but it is essential for permanently cutting sugar because it ensures your body has everything it needs. Once your muscles and organs are taken care of, you can address the cravings in your brain.</p>

<p>The first step in breaking a sugar addiction is making the decision to stop eating it completely for at least 4-7 days (the longer the better), and sticking to it. While I usually recommend making dietary changes gradually, sugar has the unique ability to inspire cravings which are refueled every time you give into them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The only way to break the cycle is to stop feeding the fire.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Once your sugar tolerance has normalized you can reintroduce it in small amounts, so long as you are sure you are eating for pleasure and not from habit.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Quitting sugar cold turkey is not entirely easy, however, even if you know the break is temporary. Cravings can be incredibly intense and make sticking to your resolution very difficult. If you hope to get through it, you must have a strategy for diverting yourself from temptation.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Start by removing all sweets (especially your weakness) from the house. Do a full sweep, no secret stashes can stay. If you do not want to throw things out, try giving them away at work or even sealing them up and putting them somewhere you can’t get to them. Making it impossible to cheat will greatly increase your probability of success. Don’t rely on willpower.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Once you have removed your most likely pitfalls you need a strategy for dealing with cravings. For this it is important to understand clearly why you want to avoid sugar, what you are making the effort for.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you aren’t sure why limiting sugar is necessary I recommend spending some time educating yourself on the subject. If you’re a visual learner, check out the first part of the video about the potential dangers of sugar and the theories of Dr. Lustig and Gary Taubes.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Being completely convinced you want to change your habits makes following through on your resolution much easier.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The next step is deciding on alternative behaviors to divert yourself from cravings—they will pass eventually so all you need to do is distract yourself for a bit while they are strongest.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What works for you will depend a lot on your own personality and needs. For many people, sugar snacking is triggered by certain environmental cues such as location or time of day. In these situations, diversions should be planned in advance to avoid slipping into habitual behavior.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Planned distractions from habitual eating can include taking different routes between locations (to avoid walking by that bakery), substituting behaviors (there are no cookies at the gym) or choosing different foods or beverages during certain activities (mint tea instead of ice cream?).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Experiment with different alternatives and figure out what works best for you. Foods with oil and protein tend to be satisfying and quench cravings, if hunger is a problem for you. Exercise is the golden ticket for others. For me personally, sugar cravings are best satisfied by fresh fruit, especially those with a lot of fiber like apples and oranges.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Make sure your alternative foods and activities are things you enjoy. If they aren’t you will eventually abandon them for your old habits. Ideally these avoidance behaviors will completely replace your sugar habit and become your new healthstyle.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As you cut sugar out of your diet, also be sure to avoid hidden sugar sources. Stay away from sauces and condiments that are really desserts in disguise, e.g. honey mustard, teriyaki, etc. Added sugar is very common in restaurant sauces (especially mid-range chain restaurants), so you might want to avoid eating out all together for a few days if you can swing it. You should also avoid sugar substitutes.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When you have completed your four day sugar fast (go a week if you can), your cravings should have subsided substantially (the first 2 days are the worst). Continue to keep sugar minimal and actively avoid situations that cue you to eat sweets. Integrate your new behaviors into your healthstyle until the new habits replace the old ones. This process takes 6-8 weeks.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>During this time get in the practice of asking yourself why you are eating sugar before you put it into your mouth. Are you eating from habit? Because of circumstance? For a special occasion? Because everyone else is?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The purpose of this exericse is not necessarily to stop yourself from eating, but to understand the reasons behind your behavior. The goal is to find a way to allow sugar into your life as a treat and not a necessity.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As you ween yourself off sugar, your tastes can change dramatically. All my life I had a sweet tooth, but over the past several years my taste for sugar has diminished and most drinks and desserts are now far too sweet for me. Consequently limiting sugar is not something I need to think much about, except during holidays and special occasions. Even then I don’t give it much thought, it happens naturally.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Besides eating whole unprocessed foods, cutting your sugar intake way down is probably the single best thing you can do to improve your health. If sugar is a problem for you, eating less of it should be one of your highest priorities.</p>

3.Now for the poo. If you keep a food diary, you can identify what constipates you. The more you poo, the cleaner your colon. If you get plenty of fiber, you should empty your whole colon at least once a day. Most people just pass one section instead of all three. Pay attention to bad smells as well. It will smell strong for 2 reasons: first- the food was in you too long a time. Remember, raw fruits&amp;veggies and soaked nuts&amp;seeds pass through you in 8 hours. Bad smells could be from many days old food. second-You have more bad bacteria than good bacteria. Bad bacteria is anaerobic, so you may be eating too many cooked foods and animal products (they contain little or no oxygen, whereas raw foods are full of oxygen).<br />
4.Buy PH strips at a health food store or aquarium supply store. Test your saliva every morning before you brush your teeth. A healthy, alkaline body has a 7.2 PH. If your PH is acidic (6.8-5.0) you are running low on magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium. It will become harder and harder to lose weight. All toxins are stored in fat cells. Toxins are acidic and need to be neutralized with those minerals. Your body won&#8217;t open fat cells because without neutralizing those toxins, your body becomes more and more poisoned.<br />
5.Understand your food cravings. Without this step, you can&#8217;t control what goes in your mouth. I was genuinely hungry at 8pm every night. I started <a href="http://curezone.com/c/?http://curezone.com/foods/juices.asp">juicing</a> green  and purple veggies every day, my cravings went away. And people have parasites! They eat the<br />
best of our food and sugar, making us crave more and more food. Parasites are anaerobic, so increasing your oxygen, kills them off.<br />
And that&#8217;s it! A healthy, svelte body is highly alkaline, and highly oxygenated.</p>

<p>A lot of neurological issues are caused by neurotoxins, which are byproducts of bugs.</p>
<p>This concept is developed by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker. He theorizes that many different infections can produce toxins. These are toxic chemicals that can persist in the body even after the infection is gone. Normally, the body is able to excrete toxins through the liver and kidneys and eliminate them from the body. What makes these toxins unique is that only the liver excretes them. The liver excretes the toxins into your bowel (via the bile) so that they can be eliminated from the body with your stool. Unfortunately, these toxins are able to be reabsorbed from the bowel and therefore cannot be eliminated (they continue to re-circulate to the liver and then back to the blood).  Dr. Shoemaker believes that one common situation where this occurs is in Lyme&#8217;s disease. The Lyme infection has often already been eliminated by using antibiotics but the toxins continues to persist in the body. Therefore people continue to be ill.
